Postpartum and Newborn Care

In the early weeks after birth, care is designed to address the mother's physical and emotional needs as well as the newborn's transitions.  Mindful attention and support of early breastfeeding helps to prevent problems and allows the midwife to identify and address challenges early.

Home visits are provided at about 24 hours, 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, and 6 weeks. State mandated newborn screenings are discussed and provided.

Labor and Birth Care

The midwife will do everything possible within the limits of safety to honor the requests of the birthing couple during labor and birth.  Depending on your preferences, the midwife and assistant will provide as much privacy or hands-on support as you need.  Regular monitoring of fetal well-being and labor progress will be provided by the midwife, the assistant, or both at your home.  A birth pool and all disposable birth and postpartum supplies are provided.

Your baby's birth is a sacred event and will be honored as such.  A gentle newborn exam and any newborn procedures of your choice will be done after you've had ample time to greet your baby and initiate breastfeeding.  Breastfeeding assistance is provided, as needed.  After the birth, the midwife and assistant will stay until mother and baby are stable and comfortable.

Prenatal Care

Excellent prenatal care and nutrition are the most important factors for a successful pregnancy and birth with minimal complications.  Health and well being of mother and baby will be our mutual goal, and we will share this responsibility equally.  An essential component of midwifery care is education.  Prenatal visits are a time to ask questions and discuss your options for care, so that you can make informed decisions about your pregnancy and birth.  Routine prenatal lab work gives the midwife valuable information as she guides you in a healthy pregnancy.  Recommended tests are discussed and provided.  Prenatal visits are un-rushed, lasting about an hour, and are scheduled every 4 weeks until 28 weeks, every 2 weeks until 36 weeks, then weekly until birth.
